Rare Monroe city-county meeting fails to materialize

11/4/2005

MONROE - A long-planned and rare meeting of the Monroe County commissioners and Monroe City Council was canceled yesterday after the county board failed to reach a quorum.

The meeting agenda featured discussion of a possible downtown parking garage that would serve as a joint project between the two bodies.

City Manager Debbie Manns said the meeting was called off in the late afternoon after it became apparent the commissioners would not meet its five-member quorum. She said all six members of council and Mayor John Iacoangeli were scheduled to attend the 7 p.m. meeting.

Commissioners Floreine Mentel, Randy Ansel, and Thomas Mell excused themselves from the meeting earlier in the week, according to Ms. Mentel, who was out of town last night. Commissioner David Scott said last night he also told the board's secretary, Vickie Koczman, he would not be attending. The fifth missing board member, James Goebel, told board Chairman Jerry Oley about 3:30 p.m. yesterday he would not be attending.

Ms. Manns said the meeting would be rescheduled.
