Many sites offering holiday meals

Heaps of free turkey, stuffing, and potatoes will be dished out around Toledo in the coming days as those with plenty reach out to those with very little.

Among the largest gatherings will be those at the Cherry Street Mission, where staff plopped the last of 40 turkeys into the oven yesterday for an expected crowd tomorrow of 500 or more.

This year, the downtown facility, one of Toledo's most recognizable homeless shelters, will serve the dinner family-style for the first time, rather than handing out food in line. Volunteers and staff will be on hand to play board games in front of the Detroit Lions football game.

It's all part of creating a welcoming atmosphere, Mr. Schuster said.

"We've got the turkeys, the sides, and we're ready," he said.
