Library's main branch to close during demonstration

12/2/2005

As a precaution, the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library's main branch, 325 North Michigan St., will be closed Dec. 10 - the day of a rally outside Government Center by a neo-Nazi group.

A riot in North Toledo on Oct. 15 followed the cancellation of a rally planned by the National Socialist Movement. Police officers, firefighters, and members of the media were hurt, and businesses, homes, and vehicles were vandalized.

"Given the unexpected turn of events during the past demonstration, we just felt it was in the best interest of our patrons to close for the day because of the unpredictability of the situation and our close proximity to the upcoming demonstration," said Jeff Sabo, the library's security coordinator.

Renovations will cause the Point Place branch to close Dec. 10. All other locations will be open. The main library will be open from 1 to 5:30 p.m. Dec. 11.
