Head-on collision kills Norwalk, Ohio, man
12/10/2005MILAN, Ohio - A Norwalk, Ohio, man was killed yesterday when his car collided head-on with another car on U.S. 250, south of Scheid Road in Erie County, the Ohio Highway Patrol said.
Dennis P. Ash, 46, was pronounced dead at the scene, troopers at the patrol's Sandusky post said.
He was southbound on U.S. 250 about 2:30 p.m. when his car crossed the center line, hitting a car being driven north by Jennifer N. Didion, 21, of Willard, Ohio. She was treated at Community Firelands Hospital, Sandusky.
The cars came to rest in the northbound driving lane and both northbound lanes were closed for about an hour, troopers said.
BOWLING GREEN - The Wood County Board of Health agreed Thursday night to condemn seven properties with buildings that health officials have been unable to get the owners to make safe.
Health Commissioner Jeff Cooper said his department would use its $70,000 demolition fund to tear down the six houses and one commercial building that are unsafe because of problems with roofs and support beams and other structural issues.
The properties are 12294 and 12273 Fort Meigs Blvd., Perrysburg; 25808 High View Lane, Perrysburg; 348 Walnut St., Risingsun; 3531 Goodrich Ave., Northwood;15320 King Rd., Haskins, and 10130 Sugar St., Milton Center.
HURON, Ohio - A strike set for yesterday was averted after negotiators for Huron City Schools and the district's teachers reached a tentative contract agreement.
John Harkelroad, a spokesman for the Huron Education Association, said the two sides met with a federal mediator from 5 p.m. Thursday until 1 a.m. yesterday, when they emerged with the tentative agreement. He said the district's 91 teachers likely will vote on it next week.
Superintendent Fred Fox could not be reached for comment.
Mr. Harkelroad said no details of the agreement were being released until after the vote.
FOSTORIA - With a show of support from commissioners, sheriffs, and prosecutors from three counties, the city is hoping for good things to come from a proposal to hire a deputy from Wood, Seneca, and Hancock counties to work exclusively in Fostoria.
Officials met with the Greater Fostoria Community Foundation yesterday to talk about how the foundation's proposal to raise enough money to hire the three deputies for five years would work.
Fostoria, which is situated in a portion of the three counties, has struggled financially in recent years, prompting a drop in its police manpower from 28 officers to 21.
The foundation's goal is to raise at least $150,000 a year to fund the proposal.
Allegiant Air won't start flying to Toledo Express Airport until Thursday, but already it has announced plans to increase its local service.
On Feb. 8, two days will be added to the airline's schedule between Toledo and Orlando Sanford International Airport, which will begin with four-days-a-week service next week.
Strong demand for the service led to Allegiant's decision to expand its schedule as the peak Florida vacation season begins in early February.
The initial days for Allegiant's Toledo-Sanford flights will be Sunday, Monday, Thursday, and Friday. Wednesday and Saturday service will be added on Feb. 8. The airline also will launch a Toledo-Las Vegas route with four-days service on Thursday.
