Driver struck at rail crossing in Tiffin dies

A Sycamore, Ohio man who attempted to beat a train across a Tiffin railroad crossing on Monday died yesterday in St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center.

Jason Kirby, 22, died in the hospital at 10:30 a.m., a hospital spokesman said.

Mr. Kirby was driving southwest on East Perry Street at 9:45 p.m. Monday when, according to witness statements to Tiffin police, he drove around lowered safety gates at a rail crossing. His car was hit in the driver's door by a northwest-bound CSX freight train.

Mr. Kirby and his passenger, Charles Kirby, were taken to Tiffin Mercy Hospital, then flown to St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center where Charles Kirby remains in critical condition.
