Gypsy moth quarantine expands to Seneca County

2/10/2006

TIFFIN Ohio s quarantine against materials that contain gypsy moth eggs has been expanded to include Seneca County, the state agriculture department announced yesterday.

Homeowners are asked to have a number of items, from doghouses to trees, inspected before trying to move them.

In addition, nursery producers must have loads they ship certified as moth-free, officials said.

The gypsy moth is an invasive pest that has been advancing into Ohio from Pennsylvania and Michigan. It kills trees, especially oaks.

Unlike the emerald ash borer, the moths can be suppressed by chemical treatment.

The moths are now in half of Ohio s 88 counties, officials said.
