Programs may aid more needy families

2/10/2006

More low-income families will be able to take advantage of assistance programs in Lucas County, including those needing cribs or help with payment of their winter heating bills - both programs funded by federal money.

The weatherization and seasonal utilities payment assistance program is open to families whose income is 200 percent or below the federal poverty guidelines and those who receive Ohio Works First assistance.

Families meeting income requirements no longer need to be previously enrolled in the HEAP program and provide a shut-off notice to be eligible for the program.

The amended program offers up to a $500 voucher for eligible families with an outstanding heating bill and a $50 voucher to provide winter weatherization supplies.

Also available is a $250 voucher to new mothers for a crib and mattress for their infants through the county's Bed for Babies program.

For more information on both programs, call the Lucas County Department of Job and Family Services at 419-213-8772.
