Explosion damages Sunoco holding tank

2/14/2006

An oil vapor explosion about 5:30 p.m. yesterday extensively damaged a largely empty oil holding tank on Sunoco property at 2027 Front St.

The tank buckled on its northern side, and its roof ruptured in several places as a result of the explosion and the ensuing fire. A cause was not determined last night.

The tank, several stories tall, was filled with only about 18 inches of oil. Fire officials estimated damage at $300,000.
