Public invited to collect gypsy moth egg masses

4/8/2006

Looking for something to do on a Wednesday night besides taking in a movie?

Well, you could help Ohio State University s extension office scrape gypsy moth egg masses off trees from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Winterfeld Park, on Hill Avenue near Richards Road.

Gypsy moths have been one of the region s biggest pests. Spring is when moth larvae start hatching from their egg masses.

The extension office is using a specific technique to gently scrape the egg masses off trees so they can be preserved and used in a research project at a state laboratory in Wooster, Ohio.

Lucas County has been fortunate recently to have smaller outbreaks of gypsy moths. At Wednesday s event, residents will learn how to remove the egg masses as they aid the park and its trees during the lesson.
