Coast Guard saves pair from sinking craft

4/13/2006

Two men were rescued from Maumee Bay yesterday after their fishing boat took on water, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

The men, whose names were not released, were not hurt.

They were in a 19-foot motor boat near the shipping channel about 2:15 p.m. when the boat began to founder. The Coast Guard's Toledo station sent its rescue boat to save the two men, whose boat was nearly submerged upon arrival.

Coast Guard personnel returned the men to Cullen Park, where their vehicle and trailer were.

A commercial vessel salvage company retrieved the boat from the water.

It was not known last night what caused the boat to sink. The Coast Guard continues to investigate the sinking.
