A father and son from East Toledo were rescued from the Maumee River late Thursday night, authorities said.

Derrick Bettinger, 22, and his 2 -year-old son, Derrick Bettinger, Jr., were fishing at the Rossford Marina about 11:30 p.m. when the boy, who was throwing rocks into the river, fell into the water.

Mr. Bettinger, who could not swim, jumped in to save the boy, and a third person, Daryl Hunter, 52, of Maumee, jumped in to rescue both of them, Rossford fire officials said.

Fire crews were called to the scene to rescue them, but Mr. Hunter already had pulled them from the 45-degree water.

The father and son were treated for hypothermia at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center. Mr. Hunter was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
