1-room school on way to Maumee

A one-room schoolhouse is on its way to Maumee's Wolcott Park.

The wooden building, now in Grand Rapids, Ohio, was donated to the Maumee Valley Historical Society, which plans to move it to a site off River Road among the Wolcott House, barn, church, and other buildings.

Maumee City Council approved the move 6-1 last night. The building will become city property when it is placed on the land.

Councilman Todd Zimmerman voted against the move, saying he was concerned that the society did not have the money to renovate the building and the city would need to help out.

The society plans to hold fund-raisers and has begun soliciting private donations, Executive Director Jack Hiles said.

In other business, council voted 6-1 to pay Metro Window Films of Findlay $805 to install solar control film on 16 courthouse windows. The sun coming in the east-facing windows makes it difficult for security to read the display on the X-ray machine.

Councilman Brent Buehrer voted no, and asked whether the security station could be moved so that people going into the municipal side of the building would not have to go through it. That would be a security risk because there is access to the court side from the second floor, Mayor Tim Wagener said.

Council voted to reduce the number of seats on the Maumee Indoor Theater board from nine to seven to make it easier to have a quorum for meetings.
