Leaking chemical found in township

5/25/2006

Authorities investigated a possible chemical leak in Lake Township last night that turned out to be residue of a chemical used as a base for paper, detergents, and other products leaking from an empty railroad car.

Township firefighters were sent about 7:45 p.m. to investigate an odor in the area of the CSX railroad tracks north of Walbridge Road. They found residual sodium hydroxide in an empty tank leaking from a vapor vent, authorities said.

No one was evacuated, and no injuries were reported.
