Memorial Day schedule
5/25/2006The sacrifices of veterans will be remembered through parades and memorial services in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan over Memorial Day weekend.
Toledo's annual Memorial Day parade will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday at Summit and Monroe streets and continue on Summit and then down Jackson Street to Civic Center Mall. A service will be held at the veterans memorial there, followed by a community picnic with entertainment.
On Monday, the United Veterans Memorial Day Parade Association will hold a parade at 9:30 a.m. from Streicher and Lagrange streets to Mt. Carmel Cemetery, where a memorial service will be held.
A memorial ceremony will be held at 9:45 a.m. Monday at Historic Woodlawn Cemetery on West Central Avenue in Toledo.
Here is a listing of other area Memorial Day events. All events are on Monday unless otherwise noted.
Adrian: Parade, 10 a.m. from Maumee Street Armory to Monument Park.
Archbold: Memorial service, 9:30 a.m. at Ruihley Park, immediately followed by a breakfast.
Bedford Township: Memorial service, 10:30 a.m. at Lambertville Cemetery.
Bowling Green: Parade, 10:30 a.m. from the Post Office on Washington Street at Main Street to Court Street for a brief stop at the Wood County Courthouse. The march then continues north on Thurstin Avenue and east on Ridge Street to Oak Grove Cemetery, where memorial services will follow. Main Street and a number of side streets near downtown will be temporarily closed during the parade, then reopened. Motorists planning to drive to the cemetery are advised to use Merry Avenue.
Blissfield: Memorial service, 2 p.m. at Riga Cemetery.
Bradner: Parade, 10:30 a.m. from the American Legion on East Crocker Street.
Bryan: Parade, 9:15 a.m. from the Kmart on Main Street to Fountain Grove Cemetery.
Defiance: Memorial service, 9:30 a.m. at Riverview Memory Gardens on State Rt. 424.
Delta: Parade, 9 a.m. from Wood Street to Greenlawn Cemetery on Adrian Street.
Dundee: Parade, 10 a.m. from M-50 and Main Street to central square gazebo, where a memorial service will follow.
Elmore: The Harris-Elmore Public Library will host a continental breakfast at 9 a.m. A parade will follow at 10:30 a.m. from Woodmore High School to the corner of Rice and Clinton streets, where a memorial service will be held.
Findlay: Parade, 10 a.m. from West Front Street to the Maple Grove Cemetery, where a memorial service will follow.
Fremont: Wreath-laying ceremony, 9 a.m. at the Sandusky County Courthouse. A parade, where World War II Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Rodger Young will be honored with a float, will follow at 10 a.m. beginning at West State and Front streets and ending at Rodger Young Park on Tiffin Street.
Fostoria: Ceremony, 9:45 a.m. in Fountain Cemetery to dedicate a recently built podium to honor veterans. at Veterans Memorial Chapel. A memorial service will follow at 10 a.m.
Genoa: Memorial service, 9 a.m. at Clay Township Cemetery.
Gibsonburg: The North Coast Veterans Museum in Williams Park on Main Street will be open from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Gilboa: Parade, 1 p.m. Sunday from Main Street to the Blanchard River bridge.
Grand Rapids: Parade, 10:20 a.m. from Otsego Middle School to Howard Park on Front Street, where a memorial service will be held.
Jerry City: Memorial service, 10:30 a.m. at Jerry City Cemetery.
Johnson's Island: Parade, 10 a.m. Sunday, followed by a service at 11:30 a.m. at the Confederate cemetery.
Lake Township: Parade, 9:30 a.m. from Fire Station No. 1 in Walbridge to the Lake Township Cemetery on Lemoyne Road. An Air National Guard fly-over will begin at 10 a.m. with a memorial service to follow.
Luna Pier: Memorial Service, noon at Memorial Park at Luna Pier and Lakewood roads.
Lyons: Parade, 1:30 p.m. beginning on East Morcini Street, to Lyons Cemetery for a service at 2 p.m.
Maumee: Memorial service, 8:30 a.m. at Maumee Fire Station No. 1, 202 East William St., where fallen Maumee firefighters will be honored. Followed by a parade beginning at Maumee Methodist Church, 405 Sackett St., ending at Union School Park, and culminating in a service at the War Memorial.
Monroe: Parade, 2 p.m. beginning at Jones Avenue and Monroe Street and continuing through downtown.
Napoleon: Parade, 10 a.m. beginning at the Henry County Fairgrounds and continuing to the Maumee River Bridge, where a service will be held. The parade will then proceed to the Henry County Veteran's Memorial, where the main memorial day service will be held.
North Baltimore: Parade, 9 a.m. beginning at Powell School, continuing to Old Maple, New Maple, and Weaver cemeteries, and ending in a wreath ceremony.
Oak Harbor: Parade, 11 a.m. starting at Oak Harbor Junior High School on Church Street, continuing to Union Cemetery, and followed by a memorial ceremony.
Ottawa: Parade, 10:30 a.m. beginning at Main Street and Perry Street and continuing to the courthouse, where a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. In the case of rain, the parade will be canceled and an alternate service will be held at Ottawa-Glandorf High School.
Ottawa Hills: Memorial service, 9 a.m. at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park on West Central Avenue.
Pemberville: Parade, 9:30 a.m., beginning at city hall and continuing to the American Legion hall, followed by a memorial service and wreath posting ceremony at 10 a.m. After the service, the men's marching group will continue to Fish, Pemberville, Webster, and Eisenhower cemeteries, where they will play taps and give a 21-gun salute at each location.
Perrysburg: Battle re-enactment, 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Fort Meigs State Memorial on River Road. Other events on Saturday include a food and crafts demonstration, guided tours of the fort, and the chance to accompany re-enactors on patrol. Event admission is $8 adult, $4 student, and $1 for Ohio Historical Society members. Children under five are free. On Monday a parade will begin at 10 a.m. at Louisiana Avenue and Fifth Street and continue to Fort Meigs Union Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Fort Meigs.
Port Clinton: Walleye Festival, events 5 p.m. Thursday to 5 p.m. Monday. More information on the festival, including ticket prices, at www.walleyefestival.com. On Monday, a service focusing on fallen sailors will be held at 9 a.m. at Port Clinton Yacht Club. A parade will follow at 10 a.m. from Port Clinton Junior High School to Monroe Street Park, where a service will be held.
Rossford: Parade, 1:30 p.m. Sunday, from Dixie Highway and Elm Street and ending at Veteran's Memorial Park with a memorial service.
Samaria: Service, 9 a.m. Sunday at Grace United Methodist Church. Rededication of a renovated stained-glass window that is more than a century old and bears the name of fallen World War I veteran Sherman Osborn.
Sandusky: Service, 2 p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church, followed by a ceremony at Veteran's Park. Parade, 9 a.m. Monday starting at the Ohio Veteran's Home and continuing to Oakland Cemetery, with ceremonies held at both locations.
Swanton: Parade, 10:30 a.m. from Crestwood Elementary School, along Main Street, to Memorial Park.
Sylvania: Memorial service, 9 a.m. at Toledo Memorial Park Cemetery. A parade will follow at 10 a.m. from Main Street to Veterans Memorial Field.
Tiffin: Parade, 10 a.m. from St. Joseph's Church, traveling along Washington Street, and ending at Frost Parkway, followed by a memorial service.
Tecumseh: Wreath ceremony, 9:40 a.m. at city hall, followed by a parade at 10 a.m. to Brookside Cemetery, where a service will be held.
Tontogany: Parade, 10:30 a.m. from the American Legion hall to Tontogany Cemetery, where a memorial service will be held.
Wauseon: Parade, 9:30 a.m. from Clinton and Elm Streets to Wauseon Cemetery, where a memorial service will be held.
Whitehouse: Anthony Wayne High School Band will march from the high school at about 9:40 a.m. to Whitehouse Cemetery, where a service will be held at 10 a.m.
