Youths can pay down library fines by reading

6/6/2006

Youngsters who have racked up fines for overdue books can once again work off their debt by reading.

The Toledo-Lucas County Public Library announced that readers up to 17 years old with fines on their library card can come to the Main Library or any branch location and earn Book Bucks by reading or even listening to a story.

The program, called Read Off Your Fines, starts June 12 and continues through Aug. 5. Young people can earn one Book Buck for every 15 minutes of reading, use their earned Book Bucks to pay off library fines, and then borrow materials to continue reading at home.

The program will coincide with the beginning of the Summer Reading Club: Unleashed! at the library.

Book Bucks must be used the same day they are earned for fines already incurred and may not be used to pay for missing or damaged material.
