Nearly $300,000 was raised to support research and local programs for people suffering from multiple sclerosis through this year's six MS Walks across northwest Ohio.

More than 1,800 walkers in Toledo alone raised nearly $166,000.

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic disease of the central nervous system. More than 3,500 people in northwest Ohio have been diagnosed with it. Nationwide, about 400,000 Americans have MS and it may affect 2 1/2 million individuals worldwide, according to the National MS Society.

The Reeves Northrup Memorial MS Bike-to-the-Bay will be June 24-25. Riders have until June 21 to register by phone at 1-800-FIGHT MS or online at www.nationalmssociety.org/oho.
