WASHINGTON - Ohio and Michigan's contingent of four U.S. senators were among those yesterday urging the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on the Interior to include $2.6 million in its fiscal year 2007 budget for emerald ash borer research and technology development.

Those involved in the funding request included Sens. Mike DeWine and George Voinovich, both Ohio Republicans, and Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow, both Michigan Democrats.

Other joining them were Republican Richard Lugar and Democrat Evan Bayh, both of Indiana, and Barack Obama and Dick Durbin, both Illinois Democrats.

The funding would assist the Northern Research Station of the U.S. Forest Service, which is researching technology to control the emerald ash borer.
