Monroe County inmate apparent suicide victim

MONROE - A 39-year-old inmate who was being held in the Monroe County jail after his conviction on Thursday was found hanging in his cell, sheriff's deputies said yesterday.

The sheriff's office, citing office policy regarding suicides, declined to identify the victim.

The inmate was sentenced to seven to 15 years in prison for assaulting a contractor at a home site and was awaiting transport to a state penal institution. Detective Dave Davison said the inmate, who was alone in his cell, was found about

7:30 p.m. Monday and taken to Mercy Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Maj. Larry Clock said the death appears to have been a suicide, though the jail video will be reviewed as part of that determination.
