Findlay officer facing discipline leaves force after 6 years

7/20/2006

FINDLAY - A six-year Findlay police officer who was facing disciplinary action has resigned, city officials said yesterday.

John Garner resigned July 12 for personal reasons, said Lt. Sean Young.

Safety Director Eileen Bensen said Mr. Garner had recently served one day of a three-day suspension for stopping his police cruiser too close to a railroad crossing, so that the gates came down and damaged the car. Two days of the suspension were held in abeyance, she said, but the officer was ordered to serve those days plus two additional days after he failed to report for training as a blood-alcohol content test operator.

Ms. Bensen and Lieutenant Young declined to comment on reports that Mr. Garner was involved in another unrelated on-duty infraction.

"Out of respect for Officer Garner, I am not at liberty to render a comment on that allegation," Lieutenant Young said.
