Ohio EPA officials plan session for breakwater

7/24/2006

Representatives from Ohio EPA will answer questions Aug. 1 at a hearing about a breakwater project in Marblehead.

The hearing at 6:30 p.m. at the Marblehead Volunteer Fire Department, 517 West Main St., is to address concerns about Lake Erie water quality related to the use of fill for the project.

Richard H. and Pamela S. Burns of Basking Ridge, N.J., plan to rehabilitate a concrete revetment and construct a 65-foot detached breakwater. If approved, 880 cubic yards of fill would be added below the ordinary high water mark.

The federal Clean Water Act requires anyone discharging fill material to obtain a water quality certification. Ohio EPA will accept written comments on the application through Aug. 8. The comments can be sent to: Ohio EPA, Division of Surface Water, Permits Processing Unit, P.O. Box 1049, Columbus, OH, 43216. To make arrangements to view the application and comments call 419-373-3081.
