Gas service to Wood County village shut off after construction accident

LUCKEY The village of Luckey remains without gas service after a construction crew hit a main line this afternoon on Locust Street near Luckey Road, authorities said.

The 3-inch steel medium pressure line was hit just before 4 p.m., Columbia Gas of Ohio spokesman Chris Kozak said.

Gas was shut off to the village about 5:15 p.m., affecting about 390 people, Mr. Kozak said.

The gas line was repaired about 8:30 p.m., but employees of the gas company still needed to shut off the gas to each home, purge the lines, and then revisit the homes to turn on their gas service, Mr. Kozak said.

Village residents who have not been visited by Columbia Gas workers are asked to keep their porch light on as a sign that they need to be contacted.

It is unknown how long it will take for gas service to be restored to the village, he said.

Luckey police Chief Eric Shiffler said police are working with the village s fire department and Wood County s emergency management agency to help village residents through the situation.

Eastwood High School in Pemberville was set up as a temporary shelter for village residents.
