19-year-old charged in 6-count indictment stemming from fatal police shooting
3/1/2007The teenage accomplice of Robert Jobe, the 15-year-old North Toledo boy who is accused of fatally shooting a Toledo police officer last week, was charged today in a multiple-count indictment in connection with the homicide.
Sherman Powell, 19, was indicted by a Lucas County grand jury on four felony charges: carrying a concealed weapon, possession of crack cocaine, trafficking in cocaine, and obstructing justice, and two misdemeanors: obstructing official business, and resisting arrest.
Police said Mr. Powell, of 722 Bush St., was with young Jobe when they were stopped in the early morning hours of Feb. 21 by police vice Detective Keith Dressel and another undercover officer in North Toledo. After the officers identified themselves as police, the two ran.
Detective Dressel, who was not wearing a bullet proof vest, was shot once in the chest during a foot chase and shootout with young Jobe in the 1400 block of Ontario Street near Bush Street.
Police said Mr. Powell ran in the opposite direction and was taken into custody immediately by two plainclothes detectives. Young Jobe surrendered to police less than nine hours later after hiding in Mr. Powell s apartment.
If convicted of all of counts in the indictment, Mr. Powell, who is being held in the county jail, could be sentenced to more than 13 years in prison.
