Rossford man gets nearly 10 years for beating student with golf club

BOWLING GREEN A Rossford man who severely beat an Owens Community College golf team member with the victim s own golf club was sentenced this afternoon to nine years and 11 months in prison by Wood County Common Pleas Judge Alan Mayberry.

Shawn R. Bryan, 21, had pleaded guilty in January to attempted murder, two counts of felonious assault, and vandalism stemming from the Oct. 18 attack on Jay Dalgarn, 19, of Pataskala, Ohio.

A co-defendant in the case, Brandon Gobbell, 20, of Rossford, pleaded guilty last month to complicity to felonious assault and was sentenced to two years in prison.

Authorities said Bryan and Gobbell were walking by a Maple Street house that Mr. Dalgarn shared with some teammates when they saw two of Mr. Dalgarn s roommates wearing pinkish-colored golf shirts and they began making derogatory remarks about their sexual orientation and race.

Mr. Dalgarn and another teammate arrived home a short time later, and Bryan and Gobbell began taunting them as well. Bryan ultimately beat Mr. Dalgarn over the head with a golf club Mr. Dalgarn was holding in front of him for self-protection.
