PETERSBURG, Mich. A two-year old girl nearly drowned yesterday when she fell into a back-yard pool while playing in the 16000 block of Railroad Street in Monroe County s Summerfield Township, Monroe County Sheriff's Office said.

The girl, whose name was being withheld pending notification of her parents, is in St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, with her condition unavailable.

The girl s family members were doing yard chores about 6:15 p.m. when she must have somehow bypassed a child-safe door off the back porch of the residence and climbed the stairs to the above-ground pool. She then fell in between the pool wall and the pool cover and sank to the bottom of the pool, sheriff s deputies said.

She was submerged for three or four minutes before a family member pulled her out, at which point she was not breathing. A family member then used CPR and resuscitated her while calling 911 for assistance. She was breathing and crying when rescuee crews arrived, deputies said.

The girl was staying with her grandparents while her parents were away on vacation.
