DEFIANCE - A Defiance-area man was pronounced dead after the motorcycle he was riding and a pickup collided just south of Defiance yesterday, the Ohio Highway Patrol said.

James J. Fifer, 60, who lived near the Defiance-Paulding county line, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash at Hammersmith and Krouse roads in Defiance Township.

He was riding east on Hammersmith just after 5 p.m., the patrol said in a news release. The pickup, driven by Alexandria M. Rosebrock, 19, of rural Hicksville, which had been stopped for a stop sign at Krouse and Hammersmith, pulled north into the intersection and was hit by the motorcycle, the patrol said.

Mr. Fifer, who wore a helmet, was thrown from his motorcycle. Neither Ms. Rosebrock nor her passenger, Amanda E. Hageman, 19, of the Defiance area, was hurt, the patrol said.
