Waterville truck crash shuts U.S. 24

A cement truck-tractor trailer crash led authorities to close U.S. 24 in southwestern Lucas County for six hours yesterday.

The crash in Waterville at U.S. 24 and Waterville-Monclova Road occurred at 12:40 p.m. Traffic was detoured via State Rts. 295 and 64 until 6:40 p.m., an Ohio Highway Patrol dispatcher said.

The cement truck, which was southbound on Waterville-Monclova, failed to stop at a stop sign at U.S. 24 and pulled into the path of the semi, which was westbound on U.S. 24, the dispatcher said. The semi and trailer overturned and the trailer burst open, spewing pieces of particle board from its load.

The semi driver, whose name was not available last night, was flown to University of Toledo Medical Center, formerly Medical College of Ohio Hospital. His injuries did not appear life-threatening, the dispatcher said.

The driver of the cement truck, whose name also was not available, was not hurt, the dispatcher said. The cement truck was empty.
