Fremont s water still has nitrate contaminants

6/22/2007

FREMONT Water treatment plant officials here yesterday issued a second warning that the water in Fremont is still testing positive for nitrate contamination.

The warning has been ongoing since June 14, when results from water samples showed nitrate levels of 13.2 milligrams per liter, exceeding the maximum contaminant level of 10 milligrams per liter.

Plant officials said they will continue to monitor the water, and will notify the public when the contaminant level is no longer exceeded. Water customers should continue to take precautions until the nitrate level is under control.

Nitrate in drinking water is a serious health threat for pregnant or nursing women and infants under 6 months old, but is not a general health concern for adults and children older than 6 months. People should not boil the water because that increases nitrate levels.
