Interim director is named for Toledo Urban League
6/22/2007One of the founding members of the Greater Toledo Urban League and a former City of Toledo administrator has taken over as the local Urban League s interim director, league officials said.
Paul Hubbard, who helped establish the Urban League in Toledo when he worked for the City of Toledo, was named this week as the interim director.
He replaces Johnny Mickler, who was president and chief executive officer of the Urban League since its inception 10 years ago.
Mr. Mickler resigned in May to take over the Urban League chapter in Greenville, S.C., his hometown.
Mr. Hubbard said even though Mr. Mickler already has started his work in Greenville, Mr. Mickler will work closely with him to maintain current league programs.
Mr. Hubbard said, though, he will not be a candidate for take over the Urban League position full-time, saying he s too busy with his restaurant business.
Urban League spokesman Fletcher Word said Mr. Hubbard also is chairman of the league s search committee. The organization hopes to find a permanent replacement for Mr. Mickler within six months.
Mr. Word said the Urban League is taking applications.
The organization, Mr. Hubbard said, hopes to find someone who has previous Urban League experience, but it will not be a requirement.
He said there also will be an emphasis on candidates with previous nonprofit experience.
Mr. Hubbard, who has served on the board of the directors of the National Urban League, is the second vice president of the Greater Toledo Urban League s board of directors.
He is chief executive officer of Alpha Restaurant Group, which owns several restaurants in Toledo, Lima, Ohio, and Detroit, with another one opening in Cleveland soon.
He served as the director of Toledo s Department of Neighborhoods and Department of Economic Development.
Mr. Word said the search committee members include him, Mr. Hubbard, Jim Murray, Yolanda Jackson, Jim Hartung, Bruce Rumpf, Rollie Abel, Janis Foley, and the Rev. Langston Bannister.
A party for Mr. Mickler will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Clarion Westgate Hotel. The event will be open to the public.
