Teen takes stand in fatal accident trial

(Posted 1:30 p.m.)MONROE Austin Oberle, 18, who pleaded guilty Monday to two felonies in a fatal car crash last year, took the stand this morning and testified against the former Bedford school board member who he said was chasing him right before the accident.

(Posted 2:57 p.m.) NEW YORK Fashion designer Liz Claiborne, whose styles became a cornerstone of career women s wardrobes in the 1970s and 1980s, has died, the company she founded said today. She was 78. The cause of her death on Tuesday was not immediately known.

(Posted 3:10 p.m.) WASHINGTON The Senate Judiciary Committee subpoenaed the White House and Vice President Dick Cheney s office today for documents relating to President Bush s controversial eavesdropping program that operated warrant-free for five years. Also named in subpoenas signed by committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., were the Justice Department and the National Security Council. The four parties have until July 18 to comply, according to a statement by Leahy s office.

(Posted 11:37 a.m.) Bowling Green State University is notifying about 1,800 current and former students of accounting professor W. David Albrecht that his computer flash drive containing important student information has been lost.

The portable device contained Social Security numbers for 199 students from Mr. Albrecht s 1992 classes. In 1992, the university switched from Social Security numbers to unique university identification numbers. The flash drive contained these university identification numbers, names, and grades for about 1,600 other students since 1993.
