One killed in crash near Defiance

DEFIANCE A local woman was killed and a local man was hurt in a two-car crash Monday morning at Banner School Road and Carpenter Road three miles north of Defiance, the Ohio Highway Patrol said.

Stacie R. Heilman, 20, of Defiance, driver of one of the cars, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Terry L. Oyer, 55, also of Defiance, driver of the second car, was airlifted to Toledo Hospital, where he was listed in serious condition, troopers said.

The crash occurred about 7:40 a.m. in Adams Township.

The Heilman car was northbound on Carpenter when it failed to yield at a stop sign to the Oyer car, which was eastbound on Banner School. The Heilman car entered the intersection and was struck broadside by the Oyer car, troopers said.

The cars then went off the northeast corner of the intersection, where the Oyer car struck a tree and the Heilman car struck a cement culvert, a road sign, and some trees.

Ms. Heilman was not wearing a seat belt, troopers said. They did not say whether Mr. Oyer was wearing one.

Defiance is about 50 miles southwest of Toledo.
