Toledo takes third in liveable-city competition

(Posted at 6:26 p.m.) The city of Toledo received third place tonight in an international competition that selects the most liveable cities in the world. The award was announced in London, where a delegation of Toledo officials and community members went to compete for the award. In Toledo s category, Malmo, Sweden was first, while Lyon, France, came in second. Toledo faced competition from six cities in the 200,001-to-750,000 population category of the International Awards for Liveable Communities 2007.

(Posted at 2:03 p.m.) A sewer line break has closed the downtown auto title office until at least Wednesday morning, according to the Lucas County Clerk of Courts office. Individuals and auto dealers needing to complete title business were directed to three other locations: 4900 North McCord Rd. in Sylvania, 4456 Heatherdowns Blvd. in Toledo, and 3034 Navarre Ave. in Oregon.

(Posted at 9:54 a.m.) TIFFIN Tiffin Middle School was evacuated Monday morning when an anonymous person called school officials and told them there was a bomb in the building, Tiffin police said. The call came in at 7:16 a.m. All students and staff were temporarily moved to the Tiffin High School just up the street, Tiffin Police Chief David LaGrange said.

(Posted at 7:03 a.m.) A man with a scarf rapped around his face robbed the Exxon Mobil on the Run gas station and convenience store at 25570 North Dixie Highway in Perrysburg early Monday of an undisclosed amount of cash, Perrysburg police said. No one was hurt, officers said.

(Posted at 8:39 a.m.) A man with a rifle shot and killed a dog Sunday night when he broke into a house in the 5300 block of Stull Road about 1 miles south of this community, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office said. No people were hurt.

(Posted at 1:45 p.m.) WASHINGTON Nissan is recalling 686,500 Altima and Sentra passenger cars to fix problems with a sensor that could lead to engine stalling.

(Posted at 7:59 a.m.) Two tractor-trailer rigs collided in the westbound lanes of the Ohio Turnpike between I-280 and State Rt. 51 just before 7:30 a.m. Monday, blocking westbound traffic southwest of here. There were no injuries, the Ohio Highway Patrol said. Genoa is about 10 miles southeast of Toledo.

(Posted at 7:20 a.m.) Fire crews were fighting a house fire early Monday at 909 North Westwood Ave. near Nebraska Avenue near central Toledo, authorities said. There were no early reports of injuries.

(Posted at 6:30 a.m.) A family of seven was left homeless when a fire of an undetermined origin that started late Sunday damaged their house at Aschcroft Drive and Wildhurst Lane in Oregon, authorities said. There were no injuries, an Oregon fire dispatcher said. No one was home when the fire at the single-story wood frame house at 1950 Aschcroft Dr. was reported at 11:37 p.m., the dispatcher said.

(Posted at 6:44 a.m.) A former postmaster has fulfilled his dream of gathering and displaying memorabilia, mostly letters, relating to the Holocaust and World War II. Founder Gary Levitt, Holocaust survivors and others opened the new exhibit this month in the lower level of the post office of this northwest Ohio village. Many of the items were obtained from museums in Washington, D.C.
