Sylvania recreation board may seek $9M

Permanent improvement projects with a price tag of nearly $9 million are being considered by the Sylvania Area Joint Recreation District board of trustees, and voters could be asked in March to approve funds for the projects.

The board, which has been discussing for several months possible upgrades and other improvements to facilities and sites, yesterday took the first of two steps needed to put a funding issue on the March 4 ballot.

Improvements at Centennial Quarry & Terrace and the Sylvania Sports & Exhibition Center at Tam-O-Shanter are among projects that could be tackled if voters approve the levy.

According to the resolution approved unanimously by 10 board of trustees present at the meeting, the amount of the proposed recreational facilities improvement bonds is $8.98 million and George France, board chairman, said the levy amount is anticipated to be under a half-mill.

In the first step, the board asks the Lucas County auditor to certify the total current tax valuation of the recreation district and the estimated average annual property tax levy needed for the bonds.

The recreation district board is to meet Dec. 11 to consider whether to proceed with placing the issue on the March ballot, Mr. France said.

The recreation district covers the Sylvania City School District.
