Icy roads faulted for 6 injuries in crashes
2/7/2008Six people were hurt, at least one seriously, in two crashes that occurred yesterday as road conditions in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan turned from water-covered to icy.
About 4:30 p.m., Steven Maiolo, 20, of Waterville was southbound on State Rt. 25 at State Rt. 582 near Haskins, Ohio, when his pickup went out of control in the intersection, crossed the center line, and hit a car driven by Alicia Cruz, 20, of Sandusky, head on, the Ohio Highway Patrol said.
Water covered the road; ice was forming, and sleet was falling, troopers said.
Ms. Cruz was taken to Wood County Hospital, but was flown to St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center.
Her condition was not available last night.
A passenger in her car, Terry Piotrowski, 22, of Bowling Green, was in good condition in Wood County Hospital.
Mr. Maiolo was taken to Wood County Hospital, but left against medical advice, a hospital spokesman said.
His passenger, Crystal Allenbaugh, 17, of Grand Rapids, Ohio, was in fair condition there last night.
Mr. Maiolo was cited for failure to control his vehicle and for improper seat-belt use, troopers said.
About 4:40 p.m. on M-52 near Carleton Road in Lenawee County's Madison Township, a pickup crossed the center line and was struck broadside by a pickup, sheriff's deputies said.
Both drivers were taken to Bixby Medical Center in Adrian. One was flown to St. Vincent in Toledo because her injuries were serious, deputies said.
Their names and conditions were not released last night.
Freezing rain had changed to heavy snow just before the accident, deputies said.
