FREMONT - Tim Wiersma became Fremont's police chief on Monday.

Chief Wiersma, a 22-year department veteran, succeeded Chief Monte Huss, who retired Feb. 29 after serving as chief for 13 years.

Chief Wiersma, 45, will be paid $68,785 a year.

He joined the department as a patrol officer in 1986, two years after graduating from Ohio State University with a criminology degree. He most recently served as the afternoon shift captain.

"I would like to continue to grow closer to the community and continue to make the police department a better team," Chief Wiersma said.
