2 men struck and killed by train in Defiance

DEFIANCE Two men were struck and killed by a train early Thursday on the CSX Railroad viaduct over Jefferson Avenue in this Defiance County community, authorities said.

Bobby Shafer, 27, of Oakwood, Ohio, and Ray Ankney, 44, of Defiance, were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, Defiance police said.

The men were walking east on the viaduct about 3 a.m. when they were struck by the eastbound train, officers said.

The accident remained under investigation Thursday morning.

Defiance is about 50 miles southwest of Toledo.
