Toledo Zoo is honored for efforts to go green

4/28/2008

The Toledo Zoo has received a 2008 Green Frog Award from the Lake Erie Western Alliance for Sustainability because of its efforts to protect endangered animals and to adopt green practices.

According to the alliance s Web site, the zoo recycles more than 30 items, eliminated foam containers from food operations, and converted most regular light bulbs to the compact fluorescent variety. In addition, new parking lot ticket booths will be wind and solar-powered, and the aquarium heating and cooling system will be geothermal by September.

The alliance, made up of representatives from education, business, government, and the public, also awarded Green Frog honors to Janet Kulakoski for her water conservation efforts; Metzgers Printing+Mailing for receiving Forest Stewardship Council Certification; to Youth Energy Savers for getting students interested in sustainability, and to Stark s Inc. for introducing a division of eco friendly plumbing, heating, and home products.
