Panel abandons search for a new LCIC director

5/1/2008

The committee charged with finding a new executive director for the Lucas County Improvement Corp. abruptly halted its search yesterday, upon learning that no money was in place for the director's salary.

The search committee - headed by Commissioner Ben Konop, one of the LCIC's chief critics - appears to be finished after voting unanimously to suspend the search.

Mr. Konop said he would step down as its chairman.

The vote came after the revelation that the LCIC's budget does not include a salary for the executive director beyond the $3,000 stipend which Interim Director Matt Sapara is paid.

Mr. Sapara also works for the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority, where he is paid a full salary.

Mr. Konop claimed the budget intentionally was left without the funds to keep him from finding a candidate.

County Commissioner Pete Gerken, who is one of the members of the LCIC's executive committee and one of the organization's founders, said the controversy - often between Mr. Konop and LCIC supporters - would prevent any good applicants from taking the job.

Mr. Gerken said he hoped the LCIC would continue with Mr. Sapara as its head indefinitely.
