ST. PAUL - The man picked by the John McCain campaign to run the 2008 Republican National Convention resigned yesterday after a report that his lobbying firm used to represent the military regime in Myanmar.

Doug Goodyear, chief executive of DCI Group, resigned a few hours after Newsweek posted a story online that the company was paid $348,000 in 2002 and 2003 to represent Myanmar's junta.

Human rights organizations and dissident groups have accused the junta of neglecting disaster victims and blocking foreign donations after Cyclone Nargis.

HOUSTON - The bodies of five people, including three young children, were found yesterday on a sprawling property in northeast Houston, police said.

A neighbor made the discovery after seeing a man's body on the porch next to a 22-caliber rifle, police Lt. Dan Harris said. The bodies of a woman and a boy were found in one part of the home, Lieutenant Harris said. The bodies of a boy and girl were found in another part of the home. The children were believed to be between ages 4 and 9.

Investigators declined to speculate on the causes of death, although they said there were no signs of a struggle. They declined to release identities of the victims.

LOS ANGELES - A fight that broke out at a South Los Angeles school escalated into a brawl involving as many as 600 students before it was quelled by police in riot gear.

The melee, which students said started around noon Friday between rival black and Hispanic gangs, forced authorities to shut down Locke High School and keep students in their classrooms. After restoring order, authorities rounded up students and separated them by race.

Four people were arrested, three students for fighting and one nonstudent on suspicion of possessing a knife, a Los Angeles school district spokesman said. Several students were injured and treated at the scene.

ATLANTA - The jackpot in the multistate Mega Millions lottery drawing has grown to $166 million because none of the tickets sold for Friday's $145 million drawing matched all five lotto numbers (16, 31, 43, 46, 56) and the Mega Ball (22). The next drawing is Tuesday.
