A Detroit-area physician affiliated with Toledo Hospital's trauma services unit died yesterday after being struck by a sport utility vehicle while riding a bicycle near Piketon, Ohio.

William F. Crowley, 57, of Northville, Mich., was pronounced dead at the scene of an accident that occurred at 7:50 a.m. along U.S. 23. The Ohio Highway Patrol said he was a participant in the Tour of the Scioto River Valley bicycling event.

A vehicle driven by Sara L. Bender, 35, of Lucasville, Ohio, struck Dr. Crowley's bicycle in the rear while the two were heading north. The impact ejected Dr. Crowley from his bike. Ms. Bender was not injured, troopers at the highway patrol's Chillicothe post said.

Pike County Prosecutor Tony Moraleja is reviewing the incident, the highway patrol said.

Dr. Crowley began working in Toledo Hospital's trauma services unit on a fill-in basis in September, a hospital spokesman said.
