A new exhibit at the Ohio Historical Center in Columbus will show how 19th and 20th-century Ohio quilters used their art to tell stories about family, heroes, healing, celebrations, even political causes.

"Quilting Stories" opens June 1 and runs through Oct. 12. It will feature 22 of the more than 400 quilts in the Ohio Historical Society's collection. Ranging from traditional to contemporary, the quilts were selected for the exhibit because each has a message.

The Bell Witch Cave, which has been the subject of ghost stories for two centuries, is among seven Tennessee sites added to the National Register of Historic Places.

The Robertson County cave is tied to the legend of John Bell, a farmer in the Adams community, who died in 1820 - three years after the family reported they were being terrorized by a spirit they called Kate.

The legend has been the subject of numerous books and at least two movies - the most recent, in 2005, entitled Bell Witch: The Movie.

The cave can be toured by appointment; details at www.bellwitchcave.com.

The festival is scheduled for Aug. 1-3 at Fort Adams State Park in Newport.

A few days later, the JVC Jazz Festival Newport takes place, Aug. 8-10, at Fort Adams State Park and at the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Saxophonist Sonny Rollins will headline that event.
