Fresno State storms back against Georgia

OMAHA - Fresno State kept its amazing postseason run alive last night thanks to an offensive performance that was nothing short of, well, amazing.

After spotting Georgia a five-run lead in the third inning, Fresno State struck for 15 runs over the next three innings for a 19-10 victory in Game 2 of the College World Series finals.

Tommy Mendonca put Fresno State in front with his record-tying fourth home run of the CWS in his team's six-run third inning.

The teams will play a deciding game tonight, with the winner bringing home the national championship.

KEEP IT SIMPLE: Georgia closer Joshua Fields said it was time to get back to basics. It worked. He retired all three Fresno State batters in the top of the ninth to seal Georgia's 7-6 win in the first game of the championship series and earned his second save of the CWS.

Fields has appeared in all four Georgia wins. In his previous game against Stanford, he gave up three hits and four runs in an inning of work.

"Against Stanford I struggled with my control a lot and felt like I was a little too fine in all my outings here," said Fields, whose 18 saves are tied for the national lead.

"[Against Fresno State] I tried not to think on the mound. I felt like I was thinking too much in my previous outings here. I just tried to cut it loose and not try to be too fine, just challenge the hitters and get ahead."

DOUBLE THREAT: Fresno State's Mendonca moved to the top of this year's CWS lists for home runs (4), RBIs (11) and total bases (20) after his home run last night.

His best outing was on Sunday against North Carolina. He went 3-for-4 with four RBIs in a win that eliminated the Tar Heels.
