SANDUSKY, Ohio - An 88-year-old man backing out of his driveway on Cedar Point Road was killed Saturday when his pickup truck was hit on the driver's side by a northbound sport utility vehicle, police said.

James Scally was taken to Firelands Hospital in Sandusky after the 11:55 a.m. crash at 905 Cedar Point Rd.

Mr. Scally was pronounced dead of multiple blunt force injuries soon after arriving at the hospital, Dr. James Patrick, Lucas County coroner, said Sunday night.

The driver and passengers in the other vehicle were two women and several children, including some who lived along Cedar Point Road, police said.

Sgt. Rich Cotterill of the Sandusky Police Department said the driver of the SUV was traveling below the posted speed limit and was not at fault, the sergeant said.

Mr. Scally was believed to have been backing across Cedar Point Road to another driveway opposite his own when the crash occurred.

It wasn't determined whether he was wearing a seat belt.
