Champion rower, 79, dies during training near downtown Toledo

A 79-year-old champion rower and a member of the Bentley family that owned a leading Toledo engineering and contracting firm died Monday morning while training for this year s world crew championships. Toledo firefighters retrieved the body of Anderton L. Bentley, Jr., of Perrysburg Township, from the Maumee River near the boat launch on the International Park side of the Martin Luther King Bridge. An autopsy is planned for Tuesday to determine the cause of death. Police have ruled out foul play.

BRYAN A 31-year-old Archbold, Ohio, man was killed early Monday when the minivan he was driving was struck by a freight train at Williams County Road 18 near this community, authorities said. William Figy, who was wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene, the Ohio Highway Patrol said.

The manager of Famous Dave s restaurant was shot Monday morning while on his way to deposit money, police said. Jeffrey Randall, 28, was listed in fair condition at Toledo Hospital, a hospital official said.

UPPER SANDUSKY, Ohio A Marion, Ohio, man was in serious condition Monday after he was hurt in an all-terrain vehicle crash two days before on State Rt. 294 near the two communities, authorities said. Ellery Maze, 36, the ATV driver, was listed in serious condition at St. Rita s Mercy Medical Center, Lima, Ohio, a hospital spokesman said.
