Delta to end service at Toledo Express

Delta Air Lines announced Tuesday morning that it will discontinue all passenger service to and from Toledo Express Airport on September 1. This elimination of Delta's remaining three daily flights to Cincinnati follows the airline's decision earlier this year to stop its Toledo service to Atlanta. There are now just three passengers carriers remaining at Toledo: Northwest Airlines operates five daily flights to Detroit, American Airlines has three daily flights to Chicago, and Allegiant Air operates services to Sanford, Fla., and St. Petersburg, Fla., several days a week.

A fire of suspicious origin late Monday caused an estimated $5,000 damage to a South Toledo pallet company, fire authorities said. There were no reported injuries. Toledo fire crews arrived to a warehouse at Superior Packaging, 2958 Airport Highway, about 11:15 p.m. and saw flames at the unoccupied structure, Battalion Fire Chief Christine Davis said.

An investment adviser has been sentenced to 12 years in prison on fraud charges related to the loss of $216 million in a hedge fund at the state agency for injured workers. Mark Lay, chief executive and founder of the now defunct MDL Capital Management of Pittsburgh, had faced a maximum sentence of 27 years.

A fire truck driver for the Pitt Township Volunteer Fire Department died in a hospital Monday night about two hours after his truck crashed on State Rt. 294 near U.S. 23 en route to the scene of an injury accident, authorities said. Richard Kear, 58, of Harpster, Ohio, the fire truck driver, was pronounced dead about 9:55 p.m. at Grant Memorial Hospital in Columbus, the Ohio Highway Patrol said.

The National Transportation Safety Board is set to release findings in the March 2007 bus crash in Atlanta that killed five baseball players from Ohio s Bluffton University. The report will come Tuesday at an NTSB meeting in Washington.

An arrest warrant has been issued for a second Bowling Green State University football player believed to have been involved in a June 2 home invasion at a Klotz Road apartment. Jacob Hardwick, 21, was indicted last week by a Wood County grand jury on charges of robbery and aggravated burglary. Bowling Green Police Lt. Tony Hetrick said officers attempted to serve the warrant on Mr. Hardwick Saturday night at his Bowling Green apartment but found the apartment vacant.

The Toledo Board of Education did not discuss starting the process of putting a bond issue on the November ballot as they had intended during a special meeting Tuesday morning. Two people on the five-member school board - president Steven Steel and Darlene Fisher - are on vacation and were not able to attend the meeting, scheduled for 9 a.m. in the Thurgood Marshall Building.

A blaze of a yet undetermined origin destroyed at least four boats late Monday and early Tuesday in Bay Point Marina on Lake Erie, authorities said. There were no reports of injuries. The fire, which had started on one of the boats, was reported about 11:15 p.m. Area fire crews left the scene shortly after 3 a.m., according to the Ottawa County Sheriff s Office.

Flooding has forced the upcoming Blissfield River Raisin Festival to be moved from two riverfront parks to the Blissfield Community Schools campus, event organizers announced yesterday. Most activities for the festival, scheduled for Friday-Sunday and normally held in Bachmayer and Ellis parks, will take place in the high school area between South Street and Walnut Street on Blissfield s southern edge. The festival entrance will be off Walnut Street.
