Man killed in motorcycle-train collision identified

Authorities Monday identified the man killed the night before when his motorcycle and a train collided at the Nebraska Avenue grade crossing between Brown and Montrose avenues in central Toledo.

Killed was Nathaniel White, 66, of Deerwood Lane in South Toledo, according to the Lucas County Coroner s Office, where his autopsy was pending.

The White motorcycle was westbound on Nebraska just west of Brown about 6:30 p.m. when it crashed through the crossing gate and then struck the caboose of a southbound Norfolk Southern freight train, police said.

Witnesses told police Mr. White applied the breaks just as he reached the center part of the crossing gate, which was in the down position. Officers said that he may have been blinded by the sun.

A man was killed last night when his motorcycle and a train collided at the Nebraska Avenue grade crossing between Brown Avenue and Parkside Boulevard, authorities said.

The name of the victim, who authorities said was pronounced dead at the scene, was not released pending notification of relatives.

The accident occurred about 6:30 p.m.

No other details were available late last night.
