7/14/2008

PORT CLINTON The Island House, at 102 Madison St. for 122 years, has been added to the National Register of Historic Places.

The three-story Island House, built in the commercial Italianate style and opened in 1886, has housed a hotel on its second and third floors. Restaurants and taverns have occupied the street level.

It s really a visual landmark in Port Clinton, said Tom Wolf, public information manager for the Ohio Historic Preservation Office of the Ohio Historical Society.

Many people who have been to Port Clinton recognize the Island House, and it s a building people associate strongly with that community.

The building was rehabilitated and reopened after a fire in 2003, but has since closed. The application for the National Register, dated Dec. 21, 2007, lists the owner as First

Properties Bellevue Inc., Bellevue, Ohio. It was approved earlier this month.
