Strong quake shakes Southern California <font color=red><font size=1><b>UPDATED</b></font></font>
7/29/2008LOS ANGELES - A strong earthquake shook Southern California on Tuesday, causing buildings to sway and triggering some precautionary evacuations. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. The jolt was felt from Los Angeles to San Diego, across the border in Tijuana, Mexico and slightly in Las Vegas. The 11:42 a.m. quake was initially estimated at 5.8 by the U.S. Geological Survey but was revised downward to 5.4. More than a dozen aftershocks quickly followed, the largest estimated at magnitude-3.8.
Toledo police and firefighters Tuesday continued to search for a man and his son who were last seen Monday in Cullen Park in Point Place, although officials are saying they believe the two have drowned. Shondale Galloway, 33, and his son, Shondale Galloway, Jr., 12, were last seen by witnesses sometime Monday fishing in Maumee Bay. They were standing chest-deep in the water, firefighters said, casting out in the area between Grassy Island and Point Place.
A Lima police sergeant who fatally shot an unarmed woman and wounded her infant son during a drug raid fired without a clear view of his target, prosecutors said Tuesday. In opening statements in Allen County Common Pleas Court, special prosecutor Jeff Strausbaugh said Sgt. Joe Chavalias problem was "target identification." "When an officer is going to pull the trigger, he needs to know what hes shooting at," the prosecutor said.
The Senate Judiciary Committee this week takes up a compact to prevent the diversion of water from the Great Lakes, one of the world's largest sources of fresh water. Lawmakers from Illinois and eight other Great Lakes states unveiled legislation last week they hope will get congressional approval.
