Katie Holmes, who helped fuel Hollywood's bob craze late last year, has been seen out and about in New York with a new pixie haircut. Holmes has modified the style popular in the late '80s and early '90s, according to celebrity hairstylist Porsche Waldo. She's sporting a shaggier version of the short 'do, with long bangs and a tapered neck. Waldo added that Rihanna has a similar cut that is more "spiky" and "punklike."

For several years, Jeffrey D. Hunt worked with clients hoping to invest their money for a brighter financial future, a trust betrayed when he diverted their funds to his own portfolio. A former financial adviser for the First Federal Bank of the Midwest in Defiance, Hunt was found guilty in U.S. District Court in Toledo yesterday of embezzling more than $850,000.

Five years after federal regulators shut down the investment arm of Continental Capital Corp. in Sylvania, the court-appointed trustee in the case continues to pursue a collection action against the brokerage's law firm. Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, Toledo's largest legal group, has hired a Washington law firm to help defend itself against accusations that its attorneys "provided legal advice relating to the scheme to make illegal investments appear legitimate."

Bob Seyfang sees his neighborhood brimming with people on the sidewalks moving in and out of specialty boutiques, dining at outdoor bistros, and shopping at local hardware and grocery stores. He imagines a collection of art galleries within walking distance of his loft and envisions the arrival of new neighbors with a penchant for local nightlife. It seems a far-flung dream at the moment, considering Mr. Seyfang lives in Toledo s lackluster downtown, an area that lost much of its vibrancy more than 30 years ago. But recent national trends show the tide may be shifting development back toward urban centers.

A Pennsylvania man driving a truck with his two children as passengers were killed in a crash Saturday night on the Ohio Turnpike in Erie County near here, southwest of Sandusky, the Ohio Highway Patrol said. The driver of the truck, Dwayne Snyder, 33, of Rebersburg, Pa., drifted off the right side of the roadway, struck a sign, continued eastbound on a grassy area adjacent to the turnpike and struck a bridge passing over the Ohio Turnpike. The vehicle came to rest underneath the bridge.

The fatal, split-second decision Police Sgt. Joseph Chavalia made the night of Jan. 4 widened the divide in the already racially tense city of Lima. "Police department! Get on the ground!" he yelled for the third time that night at a figure ducking in and out of cover in an upstairs bedroom doorway illuminated by a light in the room.

Tales abound about young actors and actresses being discovered by big-time directors who drop in on regional productions or stop to buy a cup of coffee and spot a star just waiting to happen. The reality is more prosaic: hard work, talent, and maybe a little bit of luck.

With just under three weeks remaining until Michigan opens its 2008 season against Utah on Aug. 30, there is much new Wolverines coach Rich Rodriguez has to learn about his team. But he knows this much already: He's counting on sophomore linebacker Obi Ezeh.
