FREMONT Chief Deputy Bruce Hirt has been named the acting sheriff in Sandusky County following the unexpected death of long-time Sheriff David Gangwer.

The appointment was made Tuesday by the Sandusky County commissioners.

Deputy Hirt 59, joined the sheriff s office in 1971 after serving as a police officer in Washington. He has served as deputy chief for the last eight years and lives in Fremont with his wife, Marsha.

"I m just trying to see that business as usual is carried on here as much as possible," the acting sheriff said Wednesday afternoon.

Sheriff Gangwer, who died unexpectedly Sunday after a short illness, had been Sandusky County s top law enforcement official for 28 years and was seeking another term in November s election.
