When Anthony Wayne s Ben Barrett booted a 29-yard field midway through the fourth quarter, Central s crowd sat in silence at Gallagher Stadium. The scoreboard read 10-7 in the Generals favor with little more than six minutes left in the game. Opportunity for panic to infiltrate Central s sideline certainly existed considering the Irish had not shown any consistency offensively up to that point.

Coach Mike Donnelly and his Clay Eagles couldn t help but wonder if they were headed for a repeat of last week s overtime disappointment. After the Eagles failed to convert on fourth down with 3:26 left in the fourth quarter, host Springfield and its dynamic senior quarterback Eric Page were just eight points down and 69 yards away from potentially forcing overtime.

A South Carolina charter airline will begin twice-weekly service between Toledo Express Airport and southwest Florida in November, the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority announced yesterday. Direct Air flies between six northern cities and Myrtle Beach, S.C. It will establish a second cluster of routes serving Charlotte County Airport in Punta Gorda, Fla., that will include flights to and from Toledo, port officials said during an afternoon news conference.

Journalists last week cast aside the mask of objectivity to reveal they are so deeply in the tank for Mr. Obama most have grown gills. For six days, Sarah Palin and her family were subjected to a relentless barrage of innuendo. Journalists were trying to define her before she had an opportunity to introduce herself to the people in the lower 48. She was portrayed as an ignorant redneck from a hick town who should be home caring for her children instead of running for high public office. Then Mrs. Palin got her opportunity to speak, and her enemies learned firsthand why her nickname is Sarah Barracuda.

The University of Toledo football team looked rusty at times in its season opener. Arizona took advantage of it again and again. The Rockets fell 41-16 to the Wildcats last night, failing to score a touchdown until the fourth quarter. Arizona also had a high-powered evening on offense, gaining 452 total yards to improve to 2-0. A crowd of 50,939 saw the game at Arizona Stadium.

Tonya Ayres rents a modest home in the middle of a Monroe County farm field and feels safe enough there to leave her car and home unlocked at night. Green fields expand to the horizon - past a dirt road and trees close to the house. These are all things Ms. Ayres is not willing to give up - even though it meant losing her job as a secretary with the city of Toledo.

The political conventions are history, and Ohio with its high unemployment, struggling middle class, and 20 electoral votes is the focus of the Obama and McCain campaigns. That is unless they are in Michigan, which has even higher jobless numbers. Ohio was the key battleground state of 2004, in which the vote was so close that a change of less than 60,000 ballots would have made Democrat John Kerry the president.

The downtown Toledo arena site teemed on a recent workday with all manner of men, women and machines, bustling over the site like worker bees buzzing around the hive. Hulking, odd-shaped bucket trucks, forklifts and cranes including a giant red monstrosity that resembles a steel praying mantis crawled with awkward grace like mechanized bugs.
